The hanky code developed in the mid 70's as a sort of shorthand to communicate sexual preferences, desires and kinks in the noisy and distracting environment of gay bars.
The idea behind the hanky code is pretty simple: each different colored hanky represents a different sexual practice (eg light blue = blow job) and the placement of the hanky tells onlookers whether the wearer is active or passive. Worn in the left pocket means the wearer is active, right pocket means passive.
